Coded Nature II
Coded Nature II, 2024
Coded Nature II (Vortex) is being displayed on “The Window”, a site-specific public art project by the CHANEL Culture Fund, along the facade of the Time & Life building in London (UK) from December 2024 till March 2025.
Coded Nature explores the relationship between humans, nature and technology. Autonomous vortices of DRIFT blocks responds to the movement of the audience, reflecting the endless opportunities of creation in nature as well as a continuous flow of change. The work was unveiled at Art Basel Paris 2024.
Coded Nature II (edition of 5+2AP) is a digital artwork that mimics nature’s learning and adaptation, using artificial intelligence to simulate evolution. Unlike natural vortices that affect species evolution, the vortices in this piece evolve based on viewer presence and movement. Coded Nature II responds to real-time viewer interaction, gaining strength and evolutionary traits that allow one vortex to outlast another.
This iteration of the Coded Nature series is inspired by Coded Coincidence (2021), an installation we did previously that manipulated the movement of elm seeds to perform a choreography. By highlighting the coincidental, unexpected paths of these “dancing seeds”, we explore the necessity and beauty of coincidence and its essential role in our natural processes and evolution.
This work continues DRIFT’s exploration into the complex codes which govern the natural world phenomena. Initially choreographed with a Genetic Algorithm, the installation will subtly evolve over time, reflecting the continuous nature of evolution.
